PCEA Chogoria Hospital Launches Oncology Unit to Expand Cancer Care Access

Cancer remains one of the leading non-communicable diseases globally, contributing to over 60% of annual mortality alongside cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and chronic respiratory illnesses. In Kenya, cancer is the third leading cause of death, following infectious diseases and cardiovascular conditions. However, less than 5% of healthcare facilities in the country provide palliative care services, with most of them concentrated in urban areas. This lack of accessibility leaves many cancer patients in rural regions without essential care.

Recognizing the urgent need for accessible cancer care, PCEA Chogoria Hospital officially launched its Oncology Unit on October 4, 2024. This new facility is dedicated to cancer screening, treatment, and follow-up care, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services and improving patient outcomes.

The launch of the Oncology Unit is a game-changer for the region, positioning PCEA Chogoria Hospital as a leader in cancer care. The unit is equipped with modern diagnostic tools, chemotherapy suites, and counseling services, providing a comprehensive approach to cancer treatment.

The Moderator of the 24th General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Thegu Mutahi, presided over the inauguration ceremony, commending the hospital’s commitment to quality healthcare. In his address, he highlighted the importance of making cancer treatment accessible to all Kenyans, especially those in rural areas who previously had to travel long distances to seek specialized care in cities like Nairobi.

Walk for Hope: PCEA Chogoria Hospital Leads Breast Cancer Awareness Initiative

On October 4, 2024, PCEA Chogoria Hospital, in partnership with the PCEA Church, the Chogoria community, and various healthcare partners, successfully organized the Walk for Hope—a powerful initiative aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

This impactful event was driven by the urgent need to educate and empower communities, especially marginalized populations with limited access to healthcare services. By fostering awareness and early intervention, the initiative sought to save lives and reduce the burden of breast cancer in the region.

A Community United for a Cause

The Walk for Hope saw an overwhelming turnout of over 300 participants, including:

✅ Members of the PCEA Church
✅ Local community members
✅ Healthcare professionals and partners

The walk was officially flagged off by the Deputy Secretary General, Rev. John Mbae, marking the beginning of a symbolic and educational journey through the streets of Chogoria.

Participants, carrying banners emblazoned with key breast cancer awareness messages, marched from the hospital’s upper parking area through Chogoria town, Kirurumwe, Polepole Market, and finally to Keria Market. Along the route, they distributed informational pamphlets to educate the public on breast cancer risks, symptoms, and the importance of early screening.

Educating and Empowering the Community

Beyond being a symbol of solidarity, the Walk for Hope served as a critical educational outreach. Healthcare professionals actively engaged with participants and members of the public, providing insights into breast cancer symptoms, risk factors, screening methods, and treatment options.

A special stopover at Keria Market allowed for direct community engagement, where market vendors, residents, and passersby received detailed information on breast cancer and the services available at PCEA Chogoria Hospital.

Mobility Camp

Transforming Lives: PCEA Chogoria Hospital Hosts a Successful Mobility Camp

PCEA Chogoria Hospital, in collaboration with PCEA Nendeni Board, the PCEA BSR Board, and Joni and Friends, successfully hosted a Mobility Camp from September 2nd to 6th, 2024. This life-changing initiative aimed to provide mobility aids to individuals with physical disabilities, empowering them with increased independence, dignity, and an improved quality of life.

The camp was officially launched by the Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Thegu Mutahi, who emphasized the importance of accessibility and inclusion for individuals with mobility challenges. The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Deputy Secretary General Rev. John Mbae, Director of Missions Rev. Samuel Muratha, PCEA Nendeni Board members, and PCEA Chogoria Hospital leadership, led by Board Chairman Mr. Gilbert Mutembei and CEO Dr. Elijah Mwaura.

Impactful Outreach: Distribution of Mobility Aids

Over the five-day mobility clinic, PCEA Chogoria Hospital, alongside its partners, distributed essential mobility aids, including:

✅ 225 Wheelchairs
✅ 21 Walking Canes
✅ 24 Pairs of Crutches
✅ 222 Walking Frames

These mobility devices were carefully fitted to meet the unique needs of each recipient, ensuring maximum comfort and functionality. The initiative restored freedom of movement, allowing beneficiaries to engage more actively in their daily lives.

Faith and Community: Spiritual and Emotional Support

Beyond providing mobility aids, the camp also focused on spiritual and emotional well-being. After receiving their assistive devices, recipients and their families participated in prayer sessions, led by pastors and volunteers. These moments of faith, encouragement, and healing fostered a sense of hope and unity among the attendees.

As a symbol of spiritual nourishment, each recipient received a Bible and a book sharing the inspiring journey of Joni and Friends, reinforcing the message of faith, perseverance, and resilience.

Building a Stronger, More Inclusive Community

One of the most powerful aspects of the Mobility Camp was the sense of community it fostered. Families and individuals shared personal stories of struggle, perseverance, and triumph, finding strength in each other’s experiences. Inpatient Services

This service is concerned with all the admissions. The hospital has the following wards.

Maternity ward

The maternity ward is made up of the nursery, labour ward and the post natal ward. The nursery as a baby cot capacity of 13 cots, the post natal has a bed capacity of 39 beds and the labour ward a bed capacity of 11 beds. We do both normal deliveries and the CS deliveries. The maternity ward does laboratory services and PMCT Counselling and testing. In the ward there is treatment. Patient in the ward get health education on breast health, importance of breast feeding, hygiene care of the new born babies, personal care hygiene, importance of attending post natal clinics, importance of immunization, care of cord, health of family planning and perennial care

Medical ward

Medical ward is meant for all admission of medical case. We have a bed capacity of 76 beds. It is responsible for all admission of medical cases.

Surgical ward

This ward is responsible for all admissions of the surgical cases and all wounded people. We have a bed capacity of 101.

The female surgical wards provide services to the female requiring surgical and gynecological services. It offers team collaboration of different departments such as the nursing, physiotherapists, nutritionists, orthopedic, surgeons, gynecologists and the chaplaincy office. The goal is to provide the best quality care, treatment and rehabilitation

Wound care	Applies to all types of wounds
Health education	On nutritional, medical, lifestyle, mental and surgical topics.
Palliative care	Third and fourth stage life limiting illnesses
Gynecology care	Miscarriage /abortion post care, cancers, bleeding disorders, gynecological disorders.
Bed side nursing care	All patients
Drug administration	For all patients on treatment.
Spiritual care	For spiritual aspects of patients.

Paediatric ward

The paediatric ward (shinda ward) is for admission of all the children under the age of 15 years. It has a capacity of 43 beds

Amenity ward.

we have a world class amenity ward. This ward ensures each patient is in his/her own private ward. Amenity ward has a bed capacity of 12 beds.

In our wards curative and preventive treatment are offered together with the counselling and spiritual ministry. We have personal assistants who keep a close eye to the patients and also qualified nurses and doctor who work in the wards ensuring maximum care and treatment for our patients.

However, a diagnosis means that you must dedicate yourself to taking anti-hypertensive medications and making some dietary and lifestyle modifications. High blood pressure is an important risk factor for various diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.

Outpatient Services

The hospital runs 24 hours ensuring that Outpatient services are fully offered to all our patients. These services are offered promptly at various service points for example at the Corporate Clinic (for people with insurances), general outpatient (next to the laboratory), MCH (clinic for children and mothers). Casualty (for the very sick and emergency issues). Counselling, minor surgeries, radiography are also done at the outpatient.

Pharmacy

The pharmacy is certified and approved by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya. It is responsible for dispensing approximately 250 prescriptions per day making it one of the busiest department in the hospital. The hilly skilled pharmacy staff operates an intelligent software that keeps tabs on stock levels and expiry dates of the drugs. The pharmacy staff also perform manual checks on the drugs to ensure they fit for human consumption and ideal for patients’ best discovery. The pharmacy operates 24hrs a day serving both inpatient and out patients and also CCC patients.The Team

All our pharmacy staff are qualified and certified to administer medicines. They understand how medicine react to different groups and use their expertise to dispense medicines in the dosage and manner. The hospital is committed in their continuous education to ensure they are at par with the outlined pharmacy standards.
